Forgiven and Free
Peace with God
Read Micah 7 v 19
Read I John 2 vv.1-2
God does not want us to be burdened by guilt. He wants to free us and pour out his forgiveness on us. It is a gift we cannot earn and as a gift it is to be received with open and empty hands...
Read Psalm 139 vv.23-24
God examine me and know my heart, probe me and know my thoughts; make sure I do not follow pernicious ways, and guide me in the way that is everlasting...
Ask the Holy Spirit to show you if there is any sin in your life that He would like you to confess. We will spend about one minute together in silence listening to God before we go on to the next step.
It may help to picture Jesus on the cross in your mind's eye...
Hear His words to you, "Friend, your sins are forgiven." (Luke 5.20)
With open hands receive the forgiveness He offers and thank Him...
Peace with others
Forgiving others involves an act of will, the making of a choice on our part. Sometimes we can do no more than make a beginning and it may take time before our feelings follow on. We need God's help. We need to be honest with God about how we feel and to bring those feelings to the cross. If you do not yet feel ready to forgive, ask God to help. "I wish I wanted to forgive" may be a place to begin a prayer which echoes that of the Father of the child with epilepsy in Mark 9:25 ('I do have faith. Help the little faith I have!’). Forgiving a person is not the same as condoning what they have done, accepting their views or being manipulated by them.
Read Colossians 3 v.13
Bear with one another; forgive each other as soon as a quarrel begins. The Lord has forgiven you; now you must do the same...
Ask the Holy Spirit to show you if there is anyone you need to forgive. This may include yourself or someone who has not asked your forgiveness. You might need to ask God's forgiveness for the mistaken view you have had of him/her.
Do you want to forgive?...
Ask God to help you to release that person...
Peace in the world
Is there a situation you know of where forgiveness and reconciliation would be appropriate between the people involved in broken relationships?
Within a family?
Within a church?
Groups in conflict within a nation?
Conflict between nations?
Where is God in this situation and what does he want for those people?
End the time together with a suitable prayer or by everyone saying the Lord's Prayer and The Grace.
